Summer Adult Studio Classes: The Potter’s Wheel

The DIA’s One-Day Potter’s Wheel Workshops are for anyone interested in trying the potter’s wheel, whether you’ve never touched clay or have taken many classes before!  Though the wheel takes years to master, an afternoon in the DIA Art Studio allows a great hands-on learning experience while exploring simple shapes.  Students get to decorate their work with underglazes and pots will be clear-glazed and ready for pick-up at a later date.

This June we’re offering weekly wheel workshops, with a special offer of buy 3 classes, get one free!  Students taking several classes can explore the interactions of color more as they experiment with different glazes.

The next Potter’s Wheel Workshops are scheduled every Sunday in June, from 1-4 pm. Read more information and register on our website by clicking here.

Potter’s Wheel Workshops

Our one-day Potter’s Wheel Workshops  at the DIA are a great introduction to the art and craft of the potter. The focus is on the basics, giving you a hands-on learning experience as you explore simple shapes. Students will have the chance to decorate their work with underglazes and then pick up their projects at a later date.

The next Potter’s Wheel class is April 25th, from 1-4 pm.

Register on the DIA’s website by clicking here. Or sign up for the June classes, when we’ll begin offering Potter’s Wheel Workshops every Sunday (complete with a “buy three classes – get one free” deal)!

Cylinder Seals Drop-In Workshop

FileCylinder seal Shamash Louvre AO9132

Our Sunday Drop-In Workshop for the month of September is called “Make Your Mark!  Personal Seals,” and gives visitors an opportunity to make a simple cylinder seal similar to those made in ancient times.  These seals were first created in the Near East and later were made in Mesopotamia and Egypt and were used to create multiple impressions of the same document.  Usually made of stone (often amethyst or lapis lazuli), the cylindrical seal would have images or symbols carved into it.  When the seal was rolled over wet clay, the indentiations created an impression in the clay; this process could be repeated countless time to make many copies of a document.  Because the seals were often made of beautiful stones, sometimes they would be included along with gold and jewels in graves of important people.

In our workshop visitors will be able to carve their own symbols, patterns or pictures into a wax cylinder and then roll their seal over wet clay to create an impression.   Visit us any Sunday in September in the Student Lunchroom from noon-4!

Clay Creatures Class

We’ve only been in our new studio for two weeks and have already had some wonderful workshops and classes.  Byron Nemela, one of our studio artist instructors had a fantastic Clay Creatures class last Saturday.  Everyone had a blast, with vultures, giraffes, whales, cats and dogs all in the mix.  Keep an eye on our blog to join the fun!  Upcoming classes include t-shirt designs, garden sculpture and ceramic planters (for adults).  Click on the “Classes” tab, above to learn more.
