Summer Adult Studio Classes: The Potter’s Wheel

The DIA’s One-Day Potter’s Wheel Workshops are for anyone interested in trying the potter’s wheel, whether you’ve never touched clay or have taken many classes before!  Though the wheel takes years to master, an afternoon in the DIA Art Studio allows a great hands-on learning experience while exploring simple shapes.  Students get to decorate their work with underglazes and pots will be clear-glazed and ready for pick-up at a later date.

This June we’re offering weekly wheel workshops, with a special offer of buy 3 classes, get one free!  Students taking several classes can explore the interactions of color more as they experiment with different glazes.

The next Potter’s Wheel Workshops are scheduled every Sunday in June, from 1-4 pm. Read more information and register on our website by clicking here.

Summer Camp for…ADULTS!

Our youth Summer Camps are extremely popular and a lot of fun (click here if you want to find out more or register your 5-8 or 9-12 year old), so this year we decided to expand our Summer offerings and let adults get in on the action!

In addition to our Potter’s Wheel workshops (every Sunday in June – click here for complete info), we’re offering six different one-session workshops for adults in July and August.

Check our website for full listings, but here are the programs offered:  Embellished Papers and Fibers (7/24), Simple Books (7/24), Coil-build Clay Planters (8/5), Beyond the Pinch Pot: Sculptural Clay Vessels (8/5), Scratching the Surface: Printmaking (8/14), and “Full Palette:” Painting and Pastel (8/14).

Join us for one or more of these exciting programs by clicking here and registering online, by emailing registration@dia.org, or by calling (313) 833-4249.  We hope to see you there!

Potter’s Wheel Workshops

Our one-day Potter’s Wheel Workshops  at the DIA are a great introduction to the art and craft of the potter. The focus is on the basics, giving you a hands-on learning experience as you explore simple shapes. Students will have the chance to decorate their work with underglazes and then pick up their projects at a later date.

The next Potter’s Wheel class is April 25th, from 1-4 pm.

Register on the DIA’s website by clicking here. Or sign up for the June classes, when we’ll begin offering Potter’s Wheel Workshops every Sunday (complete with a “buy three classes – get one free” deal)!

Summer Camp at the DIA!

3654098997_65d7d2f9d5[1]Today is the last day of our first week of summer camp!  The week has flown by and today is the campers’ art show for their parents.  Everyone has had a fantastic time making art together.  The older campers have, among other things, been working in painting, drawing, sculpture, clay, and papier mache.  The younger group has been making cement stepping stones, critter houses, bubble wands, butterfly nets  and books.  Check out our flickr page for more images from our first session of camp!

3654935248_559877a5f2[1]If you missed out on this camp, never fear:  our next session is from July 13-17 with camps for ages 9-12 and ages 5-8.

Each session costs $180 for members, or $225 for non-members.   Pre-registration and pre-payment required.  Call (313) 833-4249 to register.

We hope we’ll see you on July 13th!

Clay Creatures Class

We’ve only been in our new studio for two weeks and have already had some wonderful workshops and classes.  Byron Nemela, one of our studio artist instructors had a fantastic Clay Creatures class last Saturday.  Everyone had a blast, with vultures, giraffes, whales, cats and dogs all in the mix.  Keep an eye on our blog to join the fun!  Upcoming classes include t-shirt designs, garden sculpture and ceramic planters (for adults).  Click on the “Classes” tab, above to learn more.
